How the work unfolds
The Laundrette Project offers a calm, indoor vocational pathway within Ezhilagam's sheltered employment programme. Beneficiaries learn laundry service skills step by step—sorting, washing, drying, folding, and preparing finished loads—while Trust staff provide mentoring and quality checks.
Laundry work suits people who benefit from predictable routines and a quieter environment. Each completed load is a tangible contribution to community service and a chance to practise focus, care, and responsibility after recovery from mental illness.
The pathway is designed for gradual independence: early days emphasise observation and paired work; later stages invite paced ownership of stages of the process, always with a supervisor nearby.
A typical day
Daily routine
- 01 Opening checks: machines, detergents, water, and workstations
- 02 Sorting laundry by fabric, colour, and care instructions
- 03 Loading washers and selecting safe, supervised programme settings
- 04 Transfer to dryers, timing, and careful unloading
- 05 Folding, packing, labelling, and handover for collection
- 06 Closing tidy-up and brief reflection with the supervisor

Training model

Support & sponsorship needs
Support is needed for washers and dryers, detergents and consumables, utilities, maintenance, training space, and supervisor time so that the launderettes can serve beneficiaries consistently.
